Random Thoughts

It’s easy to be brave and beautiful when you’re young. Bravery is easy because we usually didn’t understand the dangers and youthful boldness is programmed into our genetics. Beauty is easy because the glow of youth is in your skin and is resistant to the stupid things we do to ourselves.

It’s hard to be either as we get older. Bravery and boldness can fade in the hard won perspective and experience of age. Knowing that things don’t always turn out all right and that the good guys don’t always win get burned into our hearts. Beauty fades and the actions and circumstances of our lives begin to show their effects. Even your very temperament and personality eventually sculpt the bodies we live in.

Yes, the true test of bravery and beauty is to be able to hold on to either even as time tries to grind them out of you.

“Things never change…”

How many times have I heard that phrase? or thought it myself?

Things never changing is a sad and dangerous illusion that we all have felt at some point. For me, it took my mother’s death to really drive home the point of it being an illusion.

There have been many metaphors for life and our journey through it. A bowl of cherries, a sad struggle, a whole spectrum of perspectives on this existence. One that came to me when doing the dishes of all things works for me right now.

It’s much like a fun house ride, maybe one of those bumper cars. We’re all on the same ride, even if different parts of it. It takes a lot of twists and turns with some pretty hard hits along the way. We all know how it started and how it will end, even if we don’t know when.

Things always change, even when we don’t realize it.
