Ayn Rand & the Spiders from Mars

Funny how many people that believe in social Darwinism and Ayn Rand’s Objectivism assume they are in the category of people that come out on top in both cases (producers, vs. the moochers).

Sometimes, even when you make good decisions (if things are going bad enough) you end up with the short straw in life. What if, after a lifetime of work, technology changed, rendering you obsolete? Would you be willing to just roll over and die under those circumstances either? Chance sometimes favors the prepared mind, other times it might just fuck you over.

Raised on Radio

Music has always been a big part of my life. I can’t make it worth a damn (my singing has been banned as a form of torture in some countries) but I love it still. Growing up in Detroit, I was always listening to a radio that sat next to my bed. It was a habit that continued for many years after moving to Atlanta as well. I’ve listened to the radio in when commuting to and from work and at work once I got there. The creation of the iPod shifted more of my attention to digital music, but I still spent time with the radio.

The reason it comes to mind today is because there has been a lot of changes in the Atlanta radio market lately. Several stations have abruptly shut down and shifted to another music format. Today, for example, is the last day of 92.9 DaveFM. As of tomorrow, they are going with a sports talk format, something I could absolutely care less about. The one thing I AM happy about is that the Powers That Be at least are giving the people working at DaveFM the chance to say goodbye properly. DaveFM and its predecessor Z93 have been a part of my life since moving down in 1991. It makes me sad to think that another happy part of my life is coming to and end. There are always new things ahead, but sometimes I miss the ones that have been left behind.

Another station that is no longer what it was is AM 750 WSB, I think I’ll write about that later.
